Barbara Johnson has always written about her "Box of Joy" and how it "injects her with confidence". I really love this concept probably because it's super easy to do! Just look around your house for a bag or a shoebox and start filling it with things that make you happy! For example:

Did your child get a good grade on a paper that he worked so hard for? Put it in there!
Did you get a postcard from someone special in your life and it brings joy to your heart every time you see it? Put it in there!
Do you have a favorite magazine that you tear out articles/pictures from and they end up in the trash? Put them in there!

I like to have a daily meltdown it reminds me that I am an imperfect human! I don't have time to look at my box everyday but when i do make the time it really reminds me that there is so much more to life than my pathetic temper tantrums! I hope you consider starting a box today!

Johnson begins this chapter with "we must understand that it is not always necessary to understand!" That is so frustrating to me! I want to know all the answers so that this crazy world will make more sense! I think most of us would love to believe that "faith in God is an insurance policy with the feature clause being God's protection from severe blows." Deep down we know this is not true but it is so hard to understand why! We don't need to understand why. We just need to continue to put our Faith in God and know that it is not always necessary to understand. (even though that still frustrates me!)

What IS vs. What IF

Focus not on 'what if', but rather on 'what is'. These words were casually tossed around by myself and a friend in a phone conversation yesterday, but once they were said, we each realized the poignancy and truth of that simple statement. She said to me, “God says He is I AM. I need to remember that.” She is dealing with a time of uncertainty due to a difficult doctor's diagnosis that leaves her wondering what lies ahead for her in the next few weeks and months.

After we hung up, I continued to turn those words over in my head. Don't each of us struggle each day to remember 'what is' and not dwell on 'what if'? God has all my 'what ifs' in His hand and I would do best to just leave them there, so today I pledge to remember 'what is'. Like this:

Jesus loved me enough to die to save me. (John 3:16)
God holds me in the shelter of His hand. (Psalm 61:4; Psalm 91:1)
Life is hard, but Jesus is stronger than anything that may come against me.(1 John 5:4-5)

So go out today, remembering that you are an ambassador of the light and hope of Jesus...and this world can definitely use a little more light! -- Glynis

Splashes of Joy - Chapter 2

Barbara Johnson says " Life is what happens after you make plans!" Isn't this true! We try so hard to get everything just right and we are so frustrated when things don't go according to plan. I am sure Barbara Johnson never planned for two of her children to die before she did. This entire chapter is devoted to "life happening!" I was shocked to read that she did a lot of grieving in private since her "ivory soap" christian friends had expected her to be done with this sadness. Do you know someone who is grieving? Do you know someone who has lost a loved one? going through a divorce? without work? If you get a moment just shoot them an encouraging email. I promise you will be the light they needed today!

That title is so funny! Be prepared to laugh (and cry) all through this book. Barbara Johnson doesn't hold anything back when she is talking about her zest for living a life for Jesus our Savior!

Is your life lacking "sparkles" right now?
